Upshall, arguably the hottest player on the team over the past six weeks, suffered an undisclosed injury in the first period of Monday's 6-1 loss to the Lightning, but Horachek doesn't believe it's too serious.
"I don't see it as being a long-long term [absence],'' Horachek said. "He's been playing hard, doing a very good job in the leadership part of it as well, so anytime you get a key guy like that out … it's not good, but it gives someone else an opportunity to step up.'' …

Jacob Markstrom, who had been backing up Scott Clemmensen, was sent back to AHL San Antonio.

If Erik Gudrbranson doesn't play Tuesday after suffering a lower body laceration during Sunday's game, Mike Mottau would likely step in. Mottau, 35, has been scratched for the past six games and in nine of the past 10.
"Being in the position I'm in, this is more mental than physical,'' said Mottau, who has played in 320 NHL games. "I'm getting my work in during practice. Not being in the game makes you simplify things when you do.''

The Panthers could have Thomas back Sunday, but may be without defenseman Erik Gudbranson if he's suspended after receiving a match penalty for his high elbow on Eric Fehr in the second. Fehr hit the deck after Gudbranson launched into him; Gudbranson got five minutes for his subsequent fight with Troy Brouwer and ejected for aiming for Fehr's head.

"Young players go through times where it feels like the world is crashing in on you,'' Jovanovski said. "When nothing seems to be working. I told [Kulikov] to have a good practice, make tape-to-tape passes and work hard. Sometimes skill isn't enough. It's not going to come to you, you've got to work your way out if it.
"The biggest lesson is less is more. A young defenseman has the tendency to do a little bit extra and it backfires. Get the puck moving, make your first pass, get it out of the zone and let someone else worry about what happens next.
"He'll come out of it. He's too good a player.''
"He's one of our most skilled defensemen out there,'' Horachek said. "He has all the tools. Right now, it's definitely mental. I think it's bothering him. He has to learn how to let it go and move back into a good place. He's fighting it a little bit and he's going to find his way.''
|

Horachek also said that Tomas Kopecky and Matt Gilroy were getting closer to being in the lineup but they wouldn't play Tuesday against the Sens.
Tim Thomas is back between the pipes. This is Thomas' 12th straight start for the Panthers.
Struggling defenseman Dmitry Kulikov will find himself on the sidelines Tuesday as he will be a healthy scratch against the Senators.
